Quick Printing Magazine: Covers

I was the creative director for Coast Publishing, which published, amongst others, Quick Printing magazine. I drew the ugly guy for a story on collections. The feet cover was my idea that I commission artist Larry Steinrock to draw. This cover drew a lot of controversy, but it certainly made the point.

I don't usually illustrate my own covers, but I had a lot of fun with this one. Quick Printing magaine was doing a feature on the ugly side of collections. I think this guy illustrates the point. We also used this image for one of our other magazines at Coast Publishing, Publishing Trade. No, this is not a self-portrait.
I came up with this idea to show how brokered printing (tags, labels, envelopes, etc.) are found just about anywhere—even in the morgue. Well, this struck some people as a tad macabre and we received more letters on this cover than any other. I guess it struck a chord with the readers. I commissioned Larry Steinrock to do the illustration (he did many for me).
